American Born Chinese is a coming of age tale about a first generation Chinese-American boy struggling to find his identity, and where he fits in. Yang beautifully accomplishes this by telling three stories that meld together the stories of the lead character, Jin, a character from Chinese folklore, the Monkey King, and a blend of racist stereotypes, Chin-kee. The result is a touching and powerful examination of the immigrant’s story.
