Offered through Adams State University as a 0.5 graduate credit, ED 589: Enhancing Education Through Pop Culture is a 3-day professional development course offered exclusively at Denver Comic Con 2017 (June 30th-July 2nd). Designed and administered by educators at Pop Culture Classroom, this course will provide participants the opportunity to share ideas, build critical partnerships, and learn from leaders in the field of pop culture education.
Throughout the convention weekend, participants will:
- Participate in both theoretical and/or methods-based workshops and panels.
- Access resources ready to be utilized in the classroom immediately.
- Learn how to leverage this ubiquitous form of cultural expression to further their craft as educators.
- Discuss how popular culture resources, events, and expressions can be successfully integrated into lesson plans for a range of classrooms and educational settings.
- Develop the ability to integrate pop culture into regular education and combine relationship development with content education.
When is the course offered?
The course will take place exclusively at Denver Comic Con 2017 (June 30th-July 2nd).
How do I sign up?
Step #1: Purchase a discounted three day pass to Denver Comic Con 2017 at this web page.
Step #2: Enroll in the course through Adams State’s online registration form (link forthcoming).
As registration with Adams State is not currently open, educators who purchase the discounted three day pass for ED 589 will be sent an email when online registration opens through Adams State.
How much does the course cost?
A normal 3 Day pass costs just about $95 with the badge, taxes and AXS fees. The .5 Graduate Credit costs $28 through Adams State. In total, that’s about $113.
But wait! That’s too much, you say! Well, good news. We love teachers, so we are discounting this class for you all!
In that vein, ED 589 participants will be eligible to receive a discounted 3-day badge so that the entire class will only cost $95, the same as a normal 3-day badge. You can purchase your discounted badge here. We are not adding any additional fees because we know your budgets are tight.
Afterward, you will be asked to register for the class with Adams State (link forthcoming). Remember that only those who sign up for the Adams State course by June 28, 2017 will be eligible to take part in the ED 589 course at DCC’17.
And don’t forget, you will get to do a heck of a lot more at DCC than attend ED 589!
What are the course requirements?
The course will be offered Pass/Fail. In order to receive a passing grade, participants must:
- Attend at least 7.5 hours of qualifying conference content at DCC (see below).
- Be sure to record the names of each panel/workshop, as you’ll need to enter these on the Conference Feedback Form.
- Actively engage in discussions and activities during these sessions.
- Complete and turn in the Conference Feedback Form by Sunday, July 16th, 2017.
How will I get my badge for DCC?
Once your registration with both DCC and Adams State have been confirmed, your name will be added to will call.
Important Note: Anyone who purchases the 3-day badge and does NOT sign up for the Adams State course will be promptly refunded their money, and must then purchase a regular 3-day badge in order to attend DCC’17.
What is “qualifying conference content”?
Denver Comic Con hosts several hundred hours of amazing programming over the three-day event. While being inspiring and just plain awesome, sitting through an hour of FAQ with Carrie Fischer won’t really support your craft as an educator. To that end, PCC has worked hard to curate the following approved, education-centric panels that will specifically support you as a teacher. A list of approved content will be available in June.
How will I receive information and updates on the course before Denver Comic Con?
Pop Culture Classroom will contact all participants via email in the first few weeks of June with additional information and updates. When enrolling in the course, please include your primary email address (one that you check during the summer.)
Am I eligible to take this course and receive credit even if I took and passed ED 589 at last year’s DCC?
Yes. Adams State understands that the content is different and the course will be dated on your transcript, demonstrating that it was a different experience.
Who can I contact with questions before DCC?
For additional information about the course, please email the education team here: email@example.com.
What happens if I need help at DCC?
Volunteers and staff will be on hand to assist you in case you have any questions during DCC. Specific on-site logistics for ED 589 participants will be provided at a later date.
Where is the Conference Feedback Form?
We will email you a link to the Conference Feedback Form once DCC has ended. That way, you can enter the panels you attended and answer the reflection questions once you’ve had time to digest all the amazing panels you’ve experienced.
What is the Conference Feedback Form?
The web form will ask you to list all the panels you attended. In addition, you will be asked to describe how you will implement your learning into you classroom. Finally, you will have the opportunity to tell what went well for you and what areas for growth you saw in this class. In all, we expect you to take 2-3 hours on this summative assessment. Not bad for .5 credits.
How will I get evidence of my credit?
If you complete all the requirements by the July 16th deadline, we will let Adams State know. Shortly after that, you will receive evidence of credit from Adams State. You can share this with your HR department for salary/recertification credit.
We sincerely hope that you will join us for this one-of-a-kind professional development opportunity at Denver Comic Con 2017! Beyond dozens of panels and sessions to choose from and the chance to work
with educators from all across the globe, this year’s DCC promises to be one of the most entertaining—and enlightening—events of the summer.
