Karen Gavigan is an associate professor in the School of Library and Information Science at the University of South Carolina. Her research interests include the use of graphic novels in schools and libraries. Karen is a member of the American Association of School Librarians’ Practice Committee, and she is Chair of the Joint Committee of the International Association of School Libraries and the International Federation of Library Associations’ School Libraries Committee. Along with Mindy Tomasevich, Karen is co-author of Connecting Comics to Curriculum: Strategies for Grades 6-12 (Libraries Unlimited). Karen is also co-editor of the books, Literacy Behind Bars: Successful Reading and Writing Strategies for Use with Incarcerated Youth and Adults (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017), and the graphic novel, AIDS in the End Zone (Young Palmetto Press, 2014), written by incarcerated youth.
