The PCC Kids’ Lab is back in action and bigger than ever! Each day of Denver Pop Culture Con, we’ll be offering fans of all ages the chance to take part in a nonstop slate of fun, interactive and engaging activities right on the show floor.

For 2018, we’re so excited to welcome more local and national organizations to the Lab than ever before! From artist groups to tech wizards to filmmakers and so much more, each of these organizations will be joining the Lab in 2018 with the goal of inspiring youth and providing fun, one-of-a-kind experiences for all our fans. Even better, all the activities in the Lab are 100% free to our attendees!

Scholastic

Scholastic was founded in 1920 as a single classroom magazine. Today, Scholastic books and educational materials are in tens of thousands of schools and tens of millions of homes worldwide, helping to Open a World of Possible for children across the globe. Scholastic’s mission is to encourage the intellectual and personal growth of all children, beginning with literacy.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter, Scholastic is bringing the Muggle Wall to the Kids’ Lab this year and asking fans: What does Harry Potter mean to you?

In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to finally put yourself on the cover of Harry Potter! Scholastic will be providing a large cover of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone with broomstick props for anyone at the Kids’ Lab to put on their best Harry Potter pose!

Corellian Droidworks

Corellian Droidworks is a local Star Wars fan club started by several original R2-D2 club builders. The club consists of droid builders, cosplay costumers, and movie prop hobbyists. They’ve partnered with numerous charitable entities to help raise needed funding and also share our passion with local communities.

At DPCC’18, Corellian Droidworks will be hosting activities including a voice-over station, interactive droids, museum-grade exhibits, photo ops and tons of Star Wars-themed areas that are meant to teach STEM through science fiction, fostering kids’ interest in the science, engineering, math and technology. Join us in the Lab to learn what goes into creating these real-life technologies from a galaxy far, far away…

Science Matters

Science Matters in America was established in 1999 right here in Colorado. For over 19 years, their quality STEM enrichment programs have given students a chance to have a meaningful, hands-on STEM experience. Since 2004, the company has grown from being in 45 schools to over 200+ schools, seven geographic regions, over five states, and 10,500+ students attend their classes annually.

At the Lab this year, Science Matters will provide a range of unique activities for each day of the Con. Visit them in the Lab on Friday to race robots and learn how to create a circuit, on Saturday to learn about carbon dioxide with dry ice, and on Sunday to make items fly in a working wind tunnel!

Think 360 Arts

Think 360 Arts is a leading provider of arts education programs and services in Colorado. Think 360 Arts aims to lead Colorado in cultivating and sustaining the arts as essential to all learning through creative experiences for students, teachers, and communities. Through teacher training, direct services to classrooms and community centers, and public awareness programs, they are working to ensure that every Colorado child—and Colorado communities as a whole—receive a complete education through the arts.

At DPCC’18, be sure to visit them at our Kids’ Lab this year to experience all sorts of new and exciting art forms. You’ll have the chance to create comic book collages using recycled comics, build an LED art piece to take home, explore VR with their drop-in VR set up, and learn to make your own prints with a wide variety of materials!

Colorado Modeling Militia Enjoying Scifi (CoMMiES)

IPMS/CoMMiES is a scale modeling club primarily located in the Denver area. Primarily scale modelers, they participate in cons all over the region with paper modeling make and takes where kids can get a taste of modeling through cutting and folding simple paper models.

A longtime Kids’ Lab partner, The CoMMiES will provide attendees paper make-and-take models to foster kids’ creativity, problem solving, and motor skills all weekend long! Afterwards, you’ll even have the chance to take your models over to the ASIFA area and create your own stop-motion films!

Klutz

Microsoft Partners closely with Education and STEM locally to empower Students and Teachers to do more. Unleash your creativity and innovation and learn how impactful technology can be beyond a screen.

At DPCC’18, Lab attendees will have the chance to get hands-on with cutting edge tools as Microsoft guides you through new experiences like Windows Mixed Reality and building a robotic finger.

MiHi PhotoBooth

MiHi Photo Booth provides creative and immersive entertainment for your guests using the newest technologies in the events industry. MiHi has recently partnered with The Slow Motion Booth, America’s #1 slow motion booth company, to create amazing interactive video experiences.

Make sure to visit MiHi Photo Booth at DPCC’18 and check out their slow-motion video creation and digital sharing booth! As a bonus, their professional video editors will compile highlights into a video that will be sent to all participants 3-5 business days after the last day of DPCC!

Denver Open Media

Denver Open Media (DOM) is the culmination of the Open Media Foundation’s innovative vision for putting the power of the media into the hands of the community. Designed to ensure all communities have the media and technology resources they need to engage in local and global communications, DOM offers state-of-the-art video equipment, as well as media distribution via the Internet and three community-programmed television channels.

At the Kids’ Lab, become the star of your own TV talk show this year with Denver Open Media! On Friday, come visit their interactive “Studio-in-a-Box” booth and you’ll be able to participate as a host, guest, director, or sound person during a multi-camera shoot.

Then, on Saturday, you’ll get to become a Green Screen Hero! Take a photo or video, choose a background and then edit it by adding titles, video, and sound effects in our mini-computer lab. As a bonus, all videos will be posted online and aired on Denver Open Media, Denver’s local cable channels!

The Art Institute of Colorado

The mission and primary responsibility of The Art Institute of Colorado shall be to provide higher education programs leading to professional opportunities in the fields of culinary arts, art and design, and technology, which prepare graduates for job entry and career advancement.

At DPCC’18, AI-Colorado will be offering a range of activities for kids – including things like video game design, designing a superhero, coloring, madlibs and even a graffiti board for students to complete each day!

ASIFA Colorado

ASIFA-Colorado is a regional chapter of ASIFA, an international association of animation lovers, filmmakers and professionals who exchange ideas and information and inspires creative collaboration across many borders. ASIFA-Colorado was established in 2001 as a non-profit corporation devoted to cultivating and promoting the art, craft and profession of animation.

This year, ASIFA-Colorado’s Animation Station returns to the Denver Pop Culture Con Kids’ Lab! Throughout the weekend, stop by one of their Animation Stands for a quick introduction to animation. You can try your hand at drawing and cutting out characters and watching them move onscreen, or move characters throughout a background scene, to create your very own stop-motion animation!

Denver Art Society Cooperative

The Denver Art Society is a volunteer-based co-op where a diverse community of artists can help each other through team building, and by doing so further our individual skills as artists. They welcome people of all ages, culture and experience level. Several of their artists offer classes throughout the week ranging from figure drawing, clay sculpture work, abstract painting and more. Their neighborhood, The Sante Fe Art District, is home to many galleries and thriving small businesses. They all care for our community, and regularly take part in clean-up rallies as well as collaborative outreach projects.

This year, the Denver Art Society will have a large sculptural piece for all of the kids to decorate together, which will be put on display at their gallery. They’ll also be hosting a photography lab on Friday and a green screen on Saturday and Sunday! Be sure to come by their booth and say hello.

Since 1995, the Jackman Brothers have been delighting audiences with their crazy antics, talented skills, and premier entertainment resources. Jackman Brothers Productions is a custom entertainment company that is dedicated to providing high quality, wholesome, interactive entertainment for the children, families and communities in which we serve!

Another returning partner and Lab favorite, Jackman Brothers Productions will be once again offering balloon art and face painting all weekend long at DPCC’18. Come join the fun at their booth!
