What I Do
I oversee the PCC staff, I coordinate with the PCC Board of Directors to advance the mission, and I am the staff member primarily responsible for raising funds and promoting the organization.
Areas of Expertise
Matt Hess started his career teaching girls expelled from public school and then joined World Hunger Relief, Inc. first as Education Director and later as Executive Director. World Hunger Relief, Inc. operates a 40-acre training farm where Matt lived with his family for 10 years. Through this organization Matt trained individuals who were preparing to serve in improving agriculture around the world, started a city-wide school gardening program, and led programs to improve food access in Waco. In 2017 Matt returned to Colorado and began working at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical campus where he focused on programs that encouraged students historically excluded from Health Care careers to consider this field. He also worked to better prepare students to serve rural and minoritized populations. While at CU Matt completed a master’s in social science. He is excited to join the PCC team in promoting a love of learning and growing diverse, inclusive, and engaged communities.
My Favorite Fandoms
Historical graphic novels, Octavia Butler, and fan art that increases inclusivity.
Why I Do It
I have spent my career as an educator with a passion for alternative methods of learning and building inclusive engaged learning communities. I am excited to join this team in bringing transformative education to students. I also believe in the necessity of encouraging students toward creative self-expression in a time of rapid cultural change. I believe that preparing students to imagine better futures for humanity offers our greatest hope for a future where all may thrive.
