(Denver, CO) — Pop Culture Classroom, a Colorado-based education, and community nonprofit, today announced the 2021 Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards for its Best in Children’s, Middle Grade, Young Adult, and Adult Graphic Literature awards. Since 2017, the organization has brought together experts from education, publishing, libraries, and the arts to evaluate the preceding year’s most compelling and educationally valuable works of graphic literature.

2021 Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards Winners

The 2021 Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards winners are:

  • Best in Children’s Fiction — Bear, Written by Ben Queen and Illustrated by Joe Todd-Stanton (BOOM! Studios)
  • Best in Children’s Non-Fiction — Black Heroes of the Wild West, Written and Illustrated by James Otis Smith (TOON Books)
  • Best in Middle-Grade Fiction — Snapdragon, Written and Illustrated by Kat Leyh (Macmillan Publishers)

“This year’s Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards winners highlight graphic literature’s incredible scope and power,” said Pop Culture Classroom Program Manager, Tajshen Campbell, Ph.D. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to recognize these unique, captivating, and educationally engaging stories and the publishers and creators behind them.” Each year, Pop Culture Classroom’s Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards celebrate the best in fiction and nonfiction graphic novels and comics. Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards finalists and winners are selected by advisory boards and juries comprised of diverse, experienced, and informed professionals whose experiences span publishing, libraries, and education using a clearly defined and transparent process.

The EGL Awards help:

  1. Educators and librarians identify high-quality graphic literature to bring into diverse educational settings.
  2. Publishers of graphic novels increase their sales and growth potential with libraries and schools.
  3. Parents, Pop Culture Fans, and Other Discerning Readers find compelling, expertly crafted graphic literature to read and enjoy.
