Pop Culture Classroom’s Awards are focused on graphic novels with educational value.

For Immediate Release: Monday, Jan. 9, 2023

(Denver, CO) — The Denver-based education nonprofit Pop Culture Classroom today kicked off its sixth annual Excellence in Graphic Literature (EGL) Awards, inviting publishers and independent creators of graphic literature to submit their best 2022 titles for consideration in this year’s EGL Awards.

“Graphic literature can be an extraordinarily powerful tool for education,” said Matt Slayter, Director of Education at Pop Culture Classroom, in prepared comments. “It is a medium that engages readers and allows them to make different types of connections to academic and social-emotional learning.”

Founded in 2017, the EGL Awards are uniquely focused on graphic novels, comic collections, and manga that teachers, librarians, parents, and readers can use to advance learning, literacy, and education.

EGL Awards title submissions are open now at PopCultureClassroom.org/eglawards, and submissions close February 10. Titles may be submitted in any of the following categories:

• Children’s Books (grades pre-K-4)
• Middle-Grade Books (grades 5-8)
• Young Adult Books (grades 9-12)
• Adult Books

Fiction and non-fiction titles will be evaluated separately, with finalist and winners for best fiction and non-fiction titles in each category. Publishers and independent creators may submit a maximum of TWO (2) books per category for each distinction.

The EGL Awards Advisory Board and Juries will then evaluate title submissions based on a clearly defined and transparent process. This team’s experiences span publishing, libraries, and education.

This year’s EGL Awards finalists will be announced in June, with category award winners, the Mosaic Award, and the EGL Awards Book of the Year to follow soon after.

Last year’s EGL Awards winners include 2022’s Book of the Year, Himawari House by Harmony Becker, and the year’s Mosaic Award Winner, Piece by Piece: The Story of Nisrin’s Hijab by Priya Huq. A full list of past winners is available online at PopCultureClassroom.org/eglawards
